i'm not sure why, but this is my favourite piece i've seen yet on dA. although the colors are what first caught my eye, i love everything about it.

:iconrainonwednesday:
p.s.--i do not find this piece sad in any way. it reminds me of picasso's man with the guitar from his blue period, (although executed with a different style, one more tantamount to impressionism to me) but without the heart-wrenching sadness. i find buoyancy here, as if the child, though concentrating hard, is just about ready to smile. maybe he's at the end of his piano piece, and has finished with aplomb. anyway i look at it, i don't see sadness, i see triumph. maybe it's because you highlighted him in red, a color of glory, while surrounding him in the muted blue.

or maybe i'm reading way too much into it. :)

hehe, thank you for the nice insight.
I can give you some history of this painting:
This was my first painting for my matric yearwork (in south africa, matric=last year of school), and I went to a special school, where I majored in art. We had just studied impressionism where we had to first produce a copy of a famous impressionistic painting (I don't think I ever finished that, because I hate copying), and then the next assignment was 'seated figure', using impressionistic style.

I comissioned a very good friend of mine who studied photography to take some photographs of a friend of ours who was studying music at the same school. I understand now why you refered to the figure in the painting as a child, because the head is depicted rather big, but that is just because of the perspective...(what perspective..? :P)

I see this as my best painting ever produced, because I loved every minute I spent on it. As you might have noticed, I love using colours, and that is maybe what you could say, marks my style. I concentrated allot on the meaning and expressions of the colours used here, so much so that they can tell the whole story, and the figure just serves a a medium for the colours to be expressed :). So on that point, I would say this painting is more fauvist influenced than impressionist.

But I am not a dictator, everybody is free to interpret this as they wish.
thank you, again for the lovely comment. I still have to comment on your poem, I have not forgotten ;)
